As evening began settling on October 27, Mark found himself on a dark mountain trail, trying desperately to urge his little horse faster to keep up with Vince, Pete, and their escort of twenty Afghans. Having spent the day with Dostum and checking the frontlines, they were all heading back to Dehi and the Alamo, intending to join up with Bob’s section in time to participate in the area commanders meeting bringing Dostum, Atta, and Mohaqiq and numerous other commanders together.

Mark kept falling behind. The trail was hard to see in the dark, and the landmarks he’d semi-memorized were starting to look all the same. Worse, he found himself starting to nod off, overcome by fatigue. Then one of his stirrup straps broke. He stopped and got off the horse, cold, frustrated, and now definitely alone.
