Screen Printing

Screen printing, or serigraphy, was developed from the craft of stenciling. A screen holds the design while a printing medium is pulled across openings in the screen, forcing color onto fabric. Because traditional stencils cannot accommodate designs with floating, or island areas, Japanese artists cut stencils from two sheets of mulberry paper and used strands of human hair or gossamer silk sandwiched between the two layers to support the isolated areas. This practice evolved into screen printing. The technique at first had limited use. Until the 1930s, most European and American fabrics were printed with engraved rollers or wood blocks. Lack of economic incentive kept manufacturers from coming up with a less labor-intensive process, and they were unwilling to produce small quantities of fabric in a particular design because of the cost and time involved in carving the rollers or blocks. The advent of knife-cut film in 1929 made commercial screen printing cheaper and more versatile. By the 1950s, screen printing had become the major method for printing all types of fabric. Screen printing offers many advantages, including lower cost and the possibility of printing a wide range of sizes with intricate design details.
