Living with Addiction

Almost by definition, an addiction weaves itself into the sufferer’s life. Individuals work to find ways to remain high-functioning, which often masks the severity of their affliction. Despite initially leading a successful double life with an addiction, the chemical, emotional, and interpersonal side effects begin to take their toll.

Shame

Shame is a quintessential aspect of addiction.23 Shame is defined as “the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging—something we’ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection.”24 Whether one is in active addiction, recovery, or living in an alcoholic household, there is a level of shame inherent to every relationship with addiction. This shame emerges from constant secret-keeping and protecting the addicted person, the family, and/or the addiction itself. This journey looks similar whether the demons are literal, metaphorical, or, in the case of the Winchesters, both. Even when Dean was literally “raised from perdition” by an angel of the Lord, he didn’t feel deserving.25 For all his bravado, Dean does not feel worthy of love and respect. As a result, he shows little to no compassion for himself, despite feeling it for others. Thus, shame both shapes and warps his life. As Crowley says, “Your problem, mate, is that nobody hates you more than you do. Believe me, I’ve tried.”26
