Auntie Precious was right.
There was no wedding like a Nigerian wedding. An Urhobo wedding.
Her wedding.
Oh, poor Ranger. He hadnât a clue what heâd been in for.
Frankly, neither did she, despite her auntie Preciousâs warning.
If the past two days had seemed crazy with preparations, they in no way compared to her bridal makeup and trousseau. Her aunties had spent four hours on her makeupâincluding false eyelashesâand then arranging an elaborate headwrap that looked like a golden fluff of whipped cream. Theyâd even given her false nails, painted coral.
And then came the dress. Deep, emerald-green skirt that hugged her hips before flaring out in ruffles to the floor, with gold stars embroidered into the hem. The bodice was gold lace, with one shoulder open, florets gathered up the neckline and spilling down one arm. She could barely walk in the gold strap heels.
And then Auntie Precious added Rangerâs coral-colored beaded necklace. âThese are for fertility,â she whispered.
Oh. My.
They finished with a heavy douse of perfume and gave her a gold-handled, white-feathered fan.
Good thing, because by high noon, she was famished, a little lightheaded, and pretty sure she might faint.
Especially when she joined her bridesmaidsâBlessing, of course, and her four girl cousins, all wearing gold dresses and green hair ties. Blessing beamed, a sort of joyous glow surrounding her that probably had more to do with her relationship with Auntie Precious and inclusion into Uncle Efeâs big family than the big day.
And a big day it was.
Her uncle Efe had constructed a massive tent in the backyard, and from it an African bandâcomplete with djembe drums, a kora, a xylophone, and a number of guitarsâplayed music while guests milled the grounds. Hundreds, maybe a thousand strangers from the village, all dressed in their colorful best, many wearing the deep coral of her necklace, some in green and gold, others in silver and deep blue.
Ranger was going to lose his mind.
She almost didnât recognize him when Auntie Precious led her to her uncleâs study where the first ceremony was held. Packed with the tribal elders, and their family, the chatter died when she arrived at the door.
Inside, on his golden throne, sat the Ovie. He wore a gold kaftan and top hat and held a cane.
But Ranger. Oh my, he wore Nigerian green well. His gold-trimmed kaftan fitted his frame perfectly, highlighting his shoulders, his trim waist. Underneath, he wore black pants and dress shoes, very dapper. And heâd cut his dark hair, more of a high and tight cut, although the front was longer, and tousled, an unruly tuft sticking out of the black kufi. Clean-shaven, he wore a solemn expression, like he might be concentrating.
Trying to get it right.
âHeâs very handsome,â Auntie Precious said in her ear as she held her back. âHeâs doing well. Heâs already presented his gifts and the Ovie has accepted them. Now he will bow in honor of the Ovie and you may enter.â
The music spilled into the house from outside as she watched Ranger take a knee in front of the Ovie.
