Summer patted her face dry and looked in the mirror. The cold water had done nothing to erase the blush staining her cheeks.

Captain Warren—a sturdy man looking to be a handful of years older than Aiden—had called it as he’d seen it. There were sparks flying.

But even so, she couldn’t allow them to ignite a fire that couldn’t be contained.

Aiden deserved better.

How had she ended up in the fire station anyway? She should be stocking up on food for Zack. She should be cleaning her spare bedroom or paying bills. She should be anywhere but here, so why was she anxious to learn more about Aiden’s day-to-day life?

Conflicting emotions ran a gamut. Round and round they went, making her head spin.

A knock sounded at the door. “You OK in there?”

Aiden would be wondering why she was taking so long. “I’ll be out in a minute.” Summer touched up her lipstick and checked her hair. The rain and heavy humidity had taken its toll, and she scrunched the top to give it a little volume before opening the door.

Aiden waited in the hallway, one foot propped against the white cinderblock wall and hands tucked into pockets. He didn’t say anything as his gaze swept over her. Then again, he didn’t have to say a word to take away her breath. This thing she had for him wasn’t going away without a fight.

Summer cleared her throat. “So…what’s next?”

He quirked a brow. “That’s up to you.”

“We can only be friends. Really. It’s the only way.”

An odd look crossed his features, and he ran a hand over his jaw. “I meant, what would you like to see next? The day room? Kitchen?”

“Oh.” Summer spun the ring on her finger, willing herself not to blush all over again. But it didn’t work. Heat climbed her cheeks. “Do you have a fitness room?”

“Absolutely.” Aiden grinned and led Summer toward the back. “I spend quite a bit of time in there.”

“It shows. You have a great…I mean…you’re in good shape.”

“Be careful. Keep up the compliments and you’ll spoil me for other women.”

“I’m sure I’m not the only woman to notice you’re physically fit.”

“It’s usually the uniform that gets attention.”

“You think so?”

“I know so.” As they approached the fitness room, Aiden stopped at the glass door. “The last couple of women I went out with were more interested in what I represent than in who I am. They wanted a hero in their lives, and when they discovered I’m a real human being with both strengths and weaknesses, they lost interest.”

“People can be shallow.” Summer shrugged and then smiled. “At least you won’t have to worry about that with me. I avoid dating uniformed men.”

Aiden didn’t return her smile—so much for trying to lighten the mood.

He moved in close, took her chin in hand, and tilted her face until their gazes met. His blue eyes held her transfixed. “I understand where you’re coming from. You’re scared. I get that. But I want you to know I plan on being around a long, long time.
