Learning Logs and Journals

Sometimes our greater gift to students is to provide an initial core of knowledge, but then show them that the presented content isn't all there is: that knowledge is fluid, subject to context, time, and imagination. Learning is more of a process than a product. By asking students to maintain a log or journal of their learning experiences and reflections, you can enable them to make the best of the learning process. Such strategies are key to helping some students become lifelong learners. Learning logs and journals also provide an intimate look at students' thinking and help students monitor their own understanding.

We use the terms "log" and "journal" interchangeably because both describe the strategy of asking students to record facts, observations, and concepts in a notebook or other medium and to comment and reflect on that material in the same medium. Students don't have to use a notebook, however; tablets, iPads, laptops, smartphones, videos, and other forms are all possible alternatives to a traditional, written journal. The electronic formats open the door for online learning logs by way of Google Docs, student-created blogs, or simply notes in a note-taking app. Teachers can monitor progress and leave feedback electronically, which makes the student and teacher's dialogue of learning a little easier on everyone.
