RI.5.2: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.

The Think-Pair-Share is a collaborative learning strategy in which students work together to solve a problem or answer questions about an assigned reading. The purpose of the Think-Pair-Share strategy is to provide students with the opportunity to talk about what they read as it is being read. The strategy requires students to think individually about a topic or answer to a question and share ideas with classmates.

Teachers must monitor and support students as they work through the following (Santa, et. al., 1996):

Think—Teachers begin by asking a specific question about the text. Students think about what they know or have learned about the topic.

Pair—Each student is paired with another student or a small group.

Share—Students share their thinking with their partner and then in a whole-class discussion.
