The most versatile look in eyeshadow is the smoky eye, because depending on how heavily you apply it, this look can go from very casual daytime wear to the most dramatic evening wear occasion. Pick a basic color that compliments your eyes or your ensemble, and select a medium and dark shade of that color in a matte formulation. Then choose a complimentary light color, which should be pearly. Avoid using deep black and gray shades, unless you are preparing for an evening event. Start by applying the pearly shadow across your eyelid and into the corner of your eye closest to your nose. Also apply some of this pearly color under your eyebrows. Next take the medium shade and apply it above the crease of your eye, starting at your nose and working to the outer edge of your eye, blending it up toward your eyebrow at the inner corner of your eye. Now take your darkest shade and starting at the outer third of your eyelid, apply this shade to your lid and into the crease, blending it into the medium color. Blend along the edges where the colors meet, so that there is no definite distinction between the colors. If you are doing a heavier smoky eye look, avoid choosing a lipstick that is too bold, bright or dark, as this will give you a harsh and garish appearance.
