Branches

As soon as daytime temperatures in late winter rise above freezing, you can gather branches from spring-flowering shrubs such as forsythia, dogwood, and lilac to trigger them to bloom inside your home.

1. Collect. Look for healthy, young branches with lots of flower buds (these are usually larger and plumper than leaf buds). Cut branches 6 to 18 inches long; longer branches stand up more easily in vases. Make the cuts about ¼ inch above a side bud or branch so that no stub is left behind.

2. Arrange. Once indoors, make another cut on a slant just above the first cut. Put the branches in a vase or other container that will hold them upright. Add warm water (110°F) no higher than 3 inches up the stems.

3. Wait. Place the container in a cool spot away from direct sunlight. Add more water to keep the level at its original height.

4. Enjoy. In a few days or weeks (depending on the species), the buds will burst into bloom. Then you can move the fragrant flowering branches to a spot where you can see and smell them all day long.
