Chapter 14

Kiana

Last night with Lazarus was something I would never forget. Although we didn’t have a lot of time, every second was filled with passion, desire, and love. Whether he wanted to say it back to me or not, I felt his love for me. He didn’t just fuck me. He made love to me, and I couldn’t get that shit off my mind.

I was getting ready for church, trying to take my time to make sure I looked my best. Lazarus was supposed to be with me, but I didn’t know how this would go. Mr. Greer would be at church because he served on the deacon board with my daddy, and it was communion Sunday. I knew he wouldn’t miss it. I was hoping that Lazarus would be able to contain himself.

I was planning to tell my parents about his age after church today. I was scared shitless because the last thing I wanted was a confrontation with my parents. They’d had my respect for my entire life, and they’d given me their respect as well. I didn’t want things to get so bad that either of us lost that.

There was no way in hell I could give up the priceless treasure I’d discovered in Lazarus Mitchell. He was the man I wanted, and if for some reason things didn’t work out, then at least I would have the experience. I was experiencing grown-up, mature love, and his age didn’t have shit to do with that. As long as he wasn’t abusive or using me, then I didn’t see what the problem was. He wasn’t that much older than me.

I took a deep breath as I looked at myself in the mirror, and I decided that I should tell them now, before they left for church. I left the bathroom and nearly ran right into Kinisha.

“Girl, where you going in such a hurry?”

“I’m going to tell them about Lazarus.”

“Oh, shit. Let me go with you.”

I made my way down the stairs, my nerves on edge. My parents were in the kitchen, preparing to leave for church.

“Mama, Daddy, before y’all leave, I have something to say.”

They both halted their forward progress. The smiles had gradually fallen from their faces as they stared at me. I knew they were probably thinking the worst, so I quickly blurted, “Lazarus is thirty-six years old.”

I swallowed hard as Kinisha held me at my waist. My dad’s face hardened, and my mama’s jaw dropped.

“Are you serious? He doesn’t look a day over twenty-five,” my mom said softly.

She was in shock. My dad, however, was steaming.

“What does he want with you then? You’re only twenty-four, Kiana. You’re barely a grown woman.”

“No disrespect, Daddy, but I’ve been a grown woman since I turned eighteen. I’ve always been responsible and mature for my age. We mesh so well. He’s been through a lot, and he’s had to start over in life. His heart is open to me, though, so I know he had to be sent to me by God.
