Steenbok Raphicerus campestris

Total length 75–90cm; tail length 5cm; shoulder height 50cm; weight 10–13kg. Horn length (male only) average 9cm; record 19.05cm.

Identification pointers Small size; very large ears; clearly demarcated reddish-fawn upperparts, white underparts; very short, unmarked tail; ram has short, smooth vertical horns.

Similar species Oribi (p.226) usually has short, black-tipped tail; larger size; longer neck; naked, dark patch below ear. Sharpe’s Grysbok (p.230) and Cape Grysbok (p.230) have grizzled white on coat; more hunched profile; preference for thickets and relatively dense cover.
