St Monica’s Rescue Maternity Home

‘No girl is ever refused help’ was the hearty motto of St Monica’s Rescue Maternity Home at Belle Vue which, at its peak, helped a thousand of the city’s young women, many of whom had been abandoned by their families.

In 1939, a report in the Yorkshire Post said that 883 girls had been cared for the year previously, including a girl of just 13 who’d given birth to a boy at the home. The matron, Miss Emily Southworth, explained that the girls ‘did well’ after leaving if they were just shown some kindness.
