Arrange 2 Friendship Star units and 2 of the 3½˝ × 3½˝ string squares. Join the units into rows, pressing the seams toward the string units. Join the rows to complete a unit. Make 72.
BLUE TRIANGLE UNITS
Match a neutral and a blue 2⅞˝ half-square triangle and stitch them together. Press the seam toward the blue. Remove the dog-ears and trim to 2½˝ × 2½˝ if needed. Make 216. Each of the 9 blocks will need 24 of these half-square triangle units. The units will measure 2½˝ × 2½˝ and finish at 2˝ × 2˝ in the quilt.
Arrange 3 of the blue and neutral half-square triangle units, filling in the diagonal of the pieced triangle with 3 blue half-square triangles. Join the units into rows, pressing the seams in opposing directions to encourage nesting of the seams. Join the rows. Make 72 pieced triangles.
Join a string triangle to a blue and neutral pieced triangle. Press the seams toward the blue triangles. Make 72. The units will measure 6½˝ × 6½˝ and finish at 6˝ × 6˝ in the quilt.
BLOCK ASSEMBLY
Arrange 2 blue triangle units with 2 stars and strings units. Join the units into rows, pressing the seams toward the blue triangles. Join the rows to complete quarter-block. Make 36. The units will measure 12½˝ × 12½˝ and finish at 12˝ × 12˝ in the quilt.
Arrange 4 quarter-blocks. Join them into rows, pressing the seams in opposing directions to facilitate nested seams. Join the rows to complete the block. Make 9. The blocks will measure 24½˝ × 24½˝ and finish at 24˝ × 24˝ in the quilt.
Sashing Construction
Join 11 neutral 1½˝ × 2½˝ rectangles end to end. Press. Add a red half-square triangle unit to each end. Press the seams toward the neutral rectangles. Make 24. The sashing will measure 1½˝ × 24½˝.
Pieced Inner Border Units
Join 5 neutral 1½˝ × 4½˝ strips end to end. Press. Add a neutral 1½˝ × 1½˝ square and a red 1½˝ × 1½˝ square to both ends. Press the seams toward the red squares. Make 12. The units will measure 1½˝ × 24½˝.
Quilt Assembly
Lay out blocks in 3 rows of 3 blocks each. Arrange the sashings and neutral cornerstones.
