A SIMPLE TIP FOR IMPROVING YOUR LISTENING SKILLS
There is an easy way to make people feel you are interested in them.
Psychologists call the technique âmirroring.â It involves subtly reflecting another personâs behaviors back at them. For example, this may include matching their level of eye contact, tone and volume of voice, and gestures.
Good mirroring signals to the other person that you are following their lead and are interested in what they have to say. Not surprisingly, if you do an online search about this technique, many articles about it involve one social setting where it can be particularly effective: going on a date with someone.
Like any good technique, you can take mirroring too far. No one likes having their every gesture mimicked in a way that is obvious. Psychology Today columnist Dr. Jeff Thompson pointed out that research shows that in some contextsâsuch as financial transactionsâit can create a negative response. However, in most social settings, a little subtle mirroring can make you seem like a very engaged listener.
