There is no place to sit down at our market stand. We like to stay on our feet and meet eye-to-eye with eager eaters. Our market display requires hours to set up, and in an ongoing statement of hope and possibility, we always bring a little more than we think we can sell. We’ve noticed that the food does not sell if it’s left in the fields or in boxes in the cooler at the farm.

Three of us work in our crowded tiny stand, but even with all hands on deck it is a challenge to sell a full truckload in the four or five hours the market is open.

“Kale of many names—lacinato, black cabbage, Toscano, dinosaur—rainbow chard, mustard greens. Collards: $3.50 a bunch, three bunches for $9!” I yell out at frequent intervals.
