‘I Am Australian’ A patriotic song that many Australians would prefer as our national anthem. In its favour, it acknowledges the diversity of modern Australia and is harmlessly uplifting; against it is that it was recorded by The Seekers and was used in an ad for Telstra.

INXS A brilliant pop-rock band that conquered the world in the 1980s and 90s, in particular with their smash album hit Kick. The group’s appeal relied heavily on their handsome, charismatic singer Michael Hutchence, who was irreplaceable, as the band took several decades to realise after his sudden death in 1997.

It’s A Knockout The greatest show in the history of Australian television, It’s A Knockout pitted four teams against one another in a series of absurd challenges where they got knocked into swimming pools with various large foam objects. It was somewhat like Gladiators and Ninja Warrior, but much better.

The show was discontinued in 1987 due to noise complaints from thoroughly un-Australian residents in Dural where the show was filmed, all of whom should have been dunked repeatedly in the Knockout pool and bludgeoned with giant foam objects for their insolence.

An attempt to bring it back in 2011 failed because nobody could recapture the perfection of the original production. Curiously, it was filmed in Malaysia, the Dural of the Pacific.

— It’s A Royal Knockout Formally known as The Grand Knockout Tournament, the programme was the major venture of Prince Edward’s brief yet glorious career as a television producer. Though a British production, it can be considered Australian due to the involvement of our beloved royal family.

Teams raised money for charity, and were captained by Princes Edward and Andrew, along with Princesses Anne and the Duchess of York, Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson. The huge list of A-grade celebrity contestants willing to humiliate themselves on prime time television in return for an association with the royals included Christopher Reeve, John Cleese, Tom Jones, Sunil Gavaskar, Kevin Kline, Cliff Richard, Jane Seymour, John Travolta, Margot Kidder, Meat Loaf, Michael Palin, and perhaps most curiously of all, opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

The show was considered a failure even though in one round the contestants dressed as giant chess pieces, and in another they dressed as giant vegetables and threw fake hams at each other.

The Queen had disapproved of the idea and advised Prince Edward against it. She was correct—it was highly tacky for the royal family to try and burnish their reputations via an association with the legendary It’s A Knockout.
