Brad and I were now so intertwined that I thought it would be best to make my second record with somebody else. Iâd gotten used to playing with a band and, as a result, some of the songs I was writing were a little more rocky and upbeat than the stuff on my debut album. In classic form, the labels and I felt that my second record could afford to be more pop and commercial, a pretty common trajectory for singer-songwriters. I had gotten a taste of the limelight and wanted to be more famous (maybe not as famous as Brad wished I was) and to make more money.
Well, the fame and money havenât come through yet, but I have to say I really like the second record, though it didnât turn out to be poppy in the slightest. It does succeed at being aggressive, which is maybe not the most attractive trait in my music, but at least itâs refreshing to hear a woman who is not the least demure or coquettish.
In the end, Brad ended up producing some songs on the album, basically because he didnât like what the other producers were doing. I had been doing a lot of shows in Norway and Sweden and worked with two different producers from there, Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall, Jason Mraz, James Morrison) and Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, the Cardigans, OK Go), who are career pop producers with credits that go on and on forever. Brad felt he needed to step in and fix things. I felt I needed to let him produce some songs so heâd be happier. Maybe we accomplished both? I donât know. We were all tangled up in blues.
The title of the record became I Know Youâre Married but Iâve Got Feelings Too, a line from one of the songs, âBleeding All Over You.â (Brad didnât much like the title either.) On it, there are songs about restlessness and about wanting to be loved, about my tormented love for Brad, about my friend George dying, about wishing I were someone else, and risqué lines about âmy hole.â There are two relatively unfriendly songs about Loudon, so I think he and I are even on that score. Thereâs also one about Kateâs cancer. I called it my âScandinavianâ record.
Both Donald Fagen and Pete Townshend played on it. I met Pete and his partner, Rachel Fuller, when they had invited me to appear on their online TV show and Pete played along on a couple of my songs. I was overwhelmed, but it was the beginning of a friendship with the innovative and brilliant artist and his wonderful partner. These musical relationships with my elders (fathers?) have always been important to me. Rufus, Lily, and Kate are also on the album. We recorded tracks in London, Malmö, Sweden, and New York, perfect for the traveler in me.
When I go back and listen to these older records, I regret that most people will never hear them or know anything about me and my work.
