WHERE’S SVEN

ALEX

Now peering out the same window as Alex, Rebecca let out a guttural cry. “Sven!”

“Quiet. We need to go. There’s nothing you can do for him now.” Alex rested a hand over Rebecca’s, and she released the curtain. Sven was lying lifeless across the gravel walkway in a pool of blood.

“Is there a back door?” Alex asked, scanning the large open space.

“Yes, let’s go.” Rebecca wiped a tear from her eye before a realization crossed her face. “The keys to the van. Sven has them.”

“No, they’re here. You set them down on the counter.” Turning, Alex swiped her hand over the keys and scooped them up.

Rebecca shot by her, with her hand out grabbing them before rushing down a long hallway, and made a left out of sight just as Alex sprang into gear, following her. They stopped at the back door and assessed the situation.

Rebecca swiveled her head around, squinting her eyes in every direction. “I don’t see anyone.”

“Where’s the van in relation to where we are now?” Alex asked.

Rebecca pointed toward the front of the house. “That way.”

“Okay, stay close to the house. In the shadows. Let’s go around,” Alex replied. “Don’t make any noise.”

“Where will we go—” Rebecca questioned, her voice a whisper. “This was the last safe place in New York.”

“Can’t be the last safe place. I don’t know, we’ll figure it out when we get into the van and get the heck out of here. They mean serious business if they could take out your bodyguard. And I don’t plan on getting caught by anyone looking to kill me.”

“He was more than just a bodyguard,” Rebecca scoffed. “Here.” She bent over to pick up an old plank of wood. “A weapon.”

“What about you?” Alex asked as they slinked around to the side of the house, the light of day receded behind the trees. The smell of the woods and fear permeated the air.

Rebecca replied, “I’ll be fine. You make a run for it if anything happens to me.”

“I’m not leaving you, I just found you. Besides, Nona would roll over in her grave if you don’t get the quilt she left for you!” Alex smiled into the darkness.

Rebecca chuckled faintly in front of her. “Nona,” she muttered.

At the corner of the house, Alex stood next to Rebecca, the plank of wood in her hands at the ready. The woman who was the key to answering all her questions poked her head around the side of the house and pointed to the bushes. “The van is just through there.”

“Do you see anything?”

“No. I think we’re safe.”

Footsteps shuffled in the distance behind them, and whispers carried in the air.

“We need to go now!” she said, and the two women sprinted toward the thick brush.

I hope she’s right about the location of the van. It’s too dark to see anything in the woods.

Alex ran as fast as she dared across the open space toward the tree line. Thank goodness I changed out of my skirt earlier.
