Quilted stitched figure. Fine lines of stitching surround the figure, which flattens the background material and allows the figure to stand out.

Stitching without a surface

Using water-soluble substances

We have already looked at using water-soluble fabric or paper as a way of transferring drawings on to another surface. However, these can also be used to create a drawing that is free from its surface, or to create a new fabric made entirely of stitches. There are, in fact, lots of things you can do with water-soluble products once you start experimenting, but in this book we are just going to look at their use for drawing with thread.

Water-soluble paper

This is just like paper in appearance. It can be printed on using an ink-jet printer, which means that you can print an image on it, place it on the background fabric and stitch around the printed image (you may need a hoop). When done, place the item in water and the paper will magically disappear.

This is quite useful if you have a photograph you wish to draw from and don’t want to make marks on the cloth.

SPOTLIGHT: Naseem Darbey

The work of Naseem Darbey provides a good example of the water-soluble technique. She develops the lines of her drawings so that they stand together once the background surface has been removed. This allows her to create pieces that float freely in space and in effect set the drawing free from its surface. Naseem describes the works shown here as hollow drawings. They were made in response to a natural-history collection of taxidermy mounts.
