They leave. Ignatius looks at the cyanide. He looks at it for a long time. He picks it up. He holds it to his nose. He sniffs it. He cries. He drinks it. He drinks the vodka. He eats the chocolate. He waits.

Detective Inspector Martin Lemsalu enters. He is dressed immaculately. DI Charlie Lee is with him.

MartinDetective Stone? My name is Detective Inspector Martin Lemsalu of the Tallinn Crime Department.

IgnatiusCharlie?

CharlieIgnatius.

IgnatiusWhat are you doing here?

CharlieWhat do you think?

MartinWe’ve checked you in. Your flight leaves in just over an hour. We can drive you to the airport. It’s amazingly close. It’s practically round the corner. It’s a small airport too, so there’s no need to get there too early.

IgnatiusHave I been asleep while I’ve been waiting for you?

Lemsalu doesn’t quite know how to respond to this, so he ignores the question.

MartinWe heard about your friend Dresner.

IgnatiusWhat did you hear about him?

MartinHa. That’s a good one.

Charlie smiles too.

MartinHe went back.

IgnatiusTo Hamburg?

MartinYes, of course to Hamburg. He was driven back this morning. He’s a bit of a party animal, I think. Yes? He has an eye for the ladies, doesn’t he?

IgnatiusIt was him. He was involved in moving the girls into Hamburg. He told Rebane that the British police had tried to find him. He got Rebane to have Vera executed. He was the man in the William Morris with Tommy White. The German who giggled, Charlie, it was him. You can’t let him go. Charlie, tell him. He’s the White Bird. Dresner is the White Bird, Charlie I swear.

Charlie can barely look at him.

Martin smiles as a means of avoiding this palpably embarrassing contention.

IgnatiusHow long have I been here?

MartinWhat?

IgnatiusHow long have I been waiting here? How did I get into this room?

Martin smiles as a means of avoiding this palpably embarrassing question.

CharlieThis is embarrassing.

He leaves.

MartinMaybe you’d like some coffee before your car gets here.

He pours him a cup of coffee. Ignatius sips it. It tastes lovely.

IgnatiusWhere’s Andres Rebane?

MartinHe’s been arrested.

IgnatiusThat’s –

MartinIn Pihkva. He robbed a jeweller’s.

IgnatiusHe what?

MartinThe Russian police won’t release him. Pihkva is an ancient city in the north-west of Russia. He went over there on a speedboat or something very early this morning. Robbed a jeweller’s. Got himself arrested. The Russian police won’t release him until they’ve charged him for robbery. He’ll be tried there.

IgnatiusThey –

MartinThey won’t agree to release him to face charges here. They’re holding him for the robbery. It’ll drag on. Until somebody pays enough money for him to be released. Which they will. It happens.

But we got his colleagues. Kristen Reims, twenty-seven. Mart Oper, twenty-nine. It was your leads with Rebane who led us to them. Which is one good thing, no? They’re going to go to jail for a very fucking long time. You should see our State Prosecutor. He’s a really good guy. He wears really nice jeans.

IgnatiusJeans?

MartinI really like his jeans. They’re smart but they’re kind of cool. He doesn’t iron them or anything like that, you know.

IgnatiusShe was my wife’s age. Vera Petrova.

MartinYou know there is one gang.
