Is there a little part of you that says, ‘I have to work harder than everybody else’?

Part of my basketball career and the journey has been that nothing was really given to me. I grew up in a basketball family and my dad played in the NBA, but the cards were pretty much stacked against me in terms of my physical stature and my abilities. I was never the guy that you could walk into a gym and see and say, ‘Oh yeah, he’s gonna be in the NBA’. I was the smallest kid on my team growing up and my work ethic was the thing that could help me close the gap on the talent and then separate me as I got into higher stages of basketball and higher levels. So, the part that I think I did the best at was whenever I got to that next level, the work multiplied and I knew that that was what was going to help me be successful. Even when I got into the NBA it was the same principle, and so eleven years into my NBA career I still have that mindset that, yes, I’m talented and I have natural ability, but the work that I put into it and the time and attention to detail, that carries all the weight for me.
