FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP

What the artist does has its genesis in nature. Humans are emulators, plus—that’s how we enhance our skills and extend our reach. Since the beginning of our species, nature has been our primary teacher. The science writer and innovation consultant, Janine Benyus, originator of the term biomimicry, said, “In the natural world, life builds from the bottom up, and it builds in resilience and multiple uses.” 2

Consider the enormous number of shared actions of the world around and within us. There’s falling, often without getting hurt—rain, leaves, and birds. Waves curl and so do armadillos. Rivers and gazelles are both great runners. Nature surprises—the owl that swoops down a mere few feet in front of you or the sudden rain squall. Patterns get made and patterns get broken—take “woven” tree limbs, waves on sand, and my cats—both the patterns of their fur and their patterns of behavior. Nature pounces—a lion attacking its prey—and it pounds—a herd of elephants and a single runner’s nimble feet. Nature sings—birds, humans, whales, insects, and even gibbons sing.

And there’s dancing. Honeybees do the “waggle” dance. Small enough to fit on your fingertip, a peacock spider does an elaborate ritual mating dance, lifting his peacock-colored back into the air and raising his feelers up to shake them, even making music with the vibration from that movement. Put my husband on the dance floor and he’ll shake more than a leg. Rattlesnakes slither. When I try getting into a too-tight dress, I slither too. Who knew that having eye-like markings on your wings could make you appear to be someone you are not? Nature fakes it, and I do that too—offered something unappetizing at a dinner party, I pretend to love it. To top it off, nature whoops and hollers, sways. Simply put, nature dazzles us with her moves.
