How you label and store counts too . Keep safety in mind even when you are not making soap. Label all of your soap making equipment with a tag that designates it for soap making purposes only. This will prevent you or someone else in your household from using your soap making equipment for other purposes. Soap and chemical residue can remain on your equipment, even after it is washed off, and other substances can interfere and drastically affect the result of your soap making. Proper labeling will help to avoid this happening. Store all of your equipment and materials properly. Lye is a poison and should be kept out of reach of children, pets, and anyone who is not familiar with how to handle it. Some of the fats and oils that you use in your soaps will have familiar names, but if you purchase them from a soap making supplier or craft store, they may not be the food grade quality that are used in cooking. It is best to not risk mistaking soap making oils for standard cooking oils. If possible, have a designated cabinet or closet that can be locked for your soap making supplies.
