Quilt Me Batik

I am smitten with batik. I pretty much love everything about it, from the beeswax to the beautiful patterns to the vintage wooden and copper tools that are often used. I imagine skilled artisans carefully making dye and crafting their intricate patterns to create luscious fabrics. The problem is that I don’t really work with fabric very often, and I’m also a total novice at anything involving a sewing machine.

Imagine my delight when I learned that paper works beautifully with batik! My friend Katherine Engen, the owner of Valley Ridge Art Studio, taught me what she knew and told me to “run with it.” And run I did, creating all sorts of new ways to make a batik effect on paper, including the methods I share here.

Although I typically use a tjanting to dispense wax, I have found that regular brushes offer a little bit more control when working with stencils. In this project, we will use stencils three ways. We will first create lovely batik papers, and then we will use a stencil to create a template for a paper quilt. Finally, we will use a stencil as our sewing guide.
