Purification Experiments: Filtration (30 minutes)

Ask students if they've ever made pasta or squeezed orange juice. How did they remove the pasta from the water, or the pulp from the juice? Most likely, students have used some sort of strainer. Let them know that they're going to try something similar—they're going to create filters for water.

Show students the filter materials: soil; sand; cotton balls; pebbles or rocks; and charcoal chunks (activated carbon, preferably). Let them know that they're going to test each of these to see how effective they are at removing pollutants (the same ones added to water in the previous session). Demonstrate using a one- or two-liter soda bottle that's been cut in half to create a simple filter. Put a bit of cheesecloth in the neck and weigh it down with one or more filter materials (see the figure).
