Skin is a special organ that does many magnificent things. Each of the three layers of skin contains as many as 20 different types of specialized cells. Researchers have identified a huge variety of stem cells that maintain and repair it on a daily basis. In the clinic for many years scientists have used epidermal skin cells and their stem cells to grow skin for patients with life-threatening burns. Basic research on stem cells and skin has progressed in the past 10 years and is expected to continue to develop. However, with new technologies such as CRISPR and gene therapy, potential is unlimited. The skin, as the largest organ in the body, will continue to play an important role in regenerative medicine.
