Gliogenesis

Gliogenesis is defined as the generation of glial cells such as astrocytes and radial glia from neural stem cells. In the adult vertebrate brain, it occurs after most neurogenesis has completed within the SVZ and involves intermediate glial progenitor cells. An elegant in vitro model system has been developed to study gliogenesis based upon embryoid bodies. Embryoid bodies are three-dimensional structures composed of pluripotent stem cells (Figure 4.33).

Figure 4.33 Phase contrast microscopy of mouse embryoid bodies. Embryoid bodies (EBs) were cultured in suspension and photos taken after 24 hours of formation. EBs were created from approximately 1000 mouse embryonic stem cells (D3 cell line). Scale bar = 100 μm. (Photo courtesy Wikimedia Commons; reprinted with permission.)
