Despite the results of these tests Alexandr Mozhaiskii was a true pioneer, well to the fore of flight technology in the last years of the nineteenth century. Some of his theories were in advance of other pioneers, such as Sir Hiram Maxim, who were his contemporaries. As it stands, his machine only possessed one-third of the power necessary to achieve sustained flight at its weight; whether or not 60 hp steam engines could have got it aloft is uncertain, as its controllability was questionable. Nevertheless, if he had lived on, it is possible that he may have outdone Clément Ader in being the first person to take off under power in a heavier-than-air craft.
