5. To release, exhale as your return your hands to your hips and carefully straighten your front knee. Turn your trunk through ninety degrees so that you face forwards and your feet return to parallel. Repeat on the opposite side.

Turn the back foot through sixty degrees

Caution: as you turn your body through ninety degrees (see Fig. 2) it is important to rotate your back foot through an angle of around sixty degrees. The reason for this is to avoid strain to the knee of your back leg as you turn your pelvis to face squarely forwards. If the angle through which you turn your back foot is too shallow, there will be a twisting effect on the back knee joint. Also, make sure that you turn your pelvis sufficiently to face squarely forwards over your front leg (see Fig. 2) before moving into the full posture. This is to avoid strain to your lower back due to twisting as you extend your arms and trunk.
