Knopfler’s 1958 Gibson Les Paul. Rick Gould

Knopfler has owned his Style O (the letter O, not the numeral zero) since before Dire Straits’ first release, and it’s a stunning example of the form. These guitars were introduced in the late 1920s after a collaborative design effort between National co-owner John Dopyera and guitarist/inventor George Beauchamp, with help from Adolph Rickenbacker’s manufacturing company (Beauchamp and Rickenbacker would later partner again to bring out some of the first electric guitars, which aimed to make the loud, punchy National resonator guitars somewhat redundant). The Style O’s tone came from a single resonator cone made of spun aluminum (much like an inverted speaker cone within the body of the guitar) that contacted the strings at its peak via a “biscuit” bridge. The guitar’s stunning looks were imparted by a cast bell-brass body with highly polished nickel plating that was etched with Hawaiian scenes, as seen on the Brothers in Arms cover. Unparalleled either in look or in tone, great vintage Nationals are fully deserving of all the lust that has been heaped upon them since Knopfler brought his into the public eye some thirty years ago and, in the process, possibly saved the instrument from oblivion.
