Mankind

Critics have proposed various venues for Mankind—including the inside of an inn, an inn yard, a simple scaffold stage, a great hall, a chapel, a guildhall, and a circular theater—but such a concentration on a precise venue may be misplaced.9 Mankind would have been readily adaptable to a wide variety of locations, and may well reflect the repertoire of a travelling company that might expect to tailor its performances to the varied circumstances encountered at different locales.10 There is, however, no hard evidence that allows us to reach a definite conclusion. Despite references that imply an interior playing space, there is no real reason why lines like Nowadays's "Here ys be dore, her ys be wey" (159) could not have been delivered outside, with the actors implicitly asking the audience to supply an imaginative interior. Consequently, the theatrical dynamic between actors and audience probably varied a good deal as venue, occasion, and other, less tangible, factors changed over time.
