* * * *
Sidney opened his eyes from a nap to find the room empty. He glanced at the clock on the wall. He’d only been asleep for forty minutes, so where had his dad gone? Just as well, he told himself. It was still hard for him to realise his dad knew so little about him.
One of Jackson’s first questions had been who the two men were who had been in the accident with Sidney. When Sidney had written Josh and Luke’s names on a sheet of paper, his dad didn’t act like he knew them. Sidney went back and wrote roommate next to Josh’s name.
“Oh,” his dad had said. “That’s the kid you spend holidays with sometimes.”
Sidney had blinked twice, but his dad wasn’t looking at him, so he’d had to write the word ‘yes’ on the paper.
Looking towards the door, Sidney wondered why Josh hadn’t been in. According to Nash, Josh had made it through the wreck with minor injuries. He understood that Luke’s condition was far more serious than his own, but surely Josh had time to stop in for a minute at least.
Sidney’s chest tightened. What if Josh knew? What if he’d been coherent enough to witness the kiss? Sidney silently cursed himself. It was his fault Luke hadn’t been belted in. He knew he’d live with that guilt for the rest of his life. It drove him crazy that he couldn’t get out of bed and check on Luke and Josh for himself, but he was trapped in this fucking room.
Pushing the button on the bed rail, Sidney slowly raised himself to a sitting position. The stitches in his back screamed in protest, but he had a letter to write. He picked up the pen and stared at the blank sheet of paper.
