Correlation studies are conducted to see whether two (or more) variables are related, not as in cause/effect, but whether as one increases, the other increases (positive correlation) or decreases (negative correlation). For example, is being more religious in later life related to more or less depression? Correlations range between +1.00 and −1.00. More complex studies with many variables related in a number of hypothesized ways (e.g., as moderators or mediators of relationships among variables), employ statistical tests that include multiple regression and structural equation modeling. Correlation provides a measure of how variables are associated; it cannot give a measure of causality.
