Chapter 11
Artisan Interviews
The best way to find out about the modern artisans working in spinning and weaving today is to ask them about their experiences, inspirations and artistic practices. With the advent of the internet, it is easier than ever to find a window into the creative world of these artisans and to find out more.
These artists and crafters earn a living with their craft. They have taken the leap into self-employment and sustain themselves and their families with their skill and artistry. I asked the artists a series of questions and encouraged them to describe their motivations, inspirations and goals for the future. They have taken traditional techniques and allowed them to evolve as they have explored their own ways of working.
You can find out more about each artist by following the links provided for their websites and social media. You can also buy their products directly, or even commission pieces yourself, and help to support the hand-made industry directly at source!
Sharon Poole, Weaver, Somerset UK
What first attracted you to your craft?
In one word â colour. Present me with a pile of fabric or yarns and it is like putting a small child in a sweet shop! I have been attracted to fibre arts and crafts since childhood. Growing up in the 1960s, my mother made many of my clothes and I was always given the remnants to make dollsâ clothes with. I also made a patchwork quilt with my mother, sewing tiny squares of cotton fabric over papers in the old-fashioned way, before assembling the whole. My attraction to weaving lies in the combination of colour and texture, combined with the basic simplicity of the craft. With a loom and yarn, there are infinite possibilities.
