“FOR THE LAST time, no,” I said, hopping out of the golf cart. “You’ll have to get Charlie to help. He can use the extra hours anyway.”
“Charlie can’t tell the time on a standard clock,” John said with a grunt as he fell in step beside me, moving toward the maintenance building door. His head pivoted on its stack of muscles to watch a red bikini walk by on the way to the clubhouse pool.
I pulled the door open and didn’t wait for him to follow. As soon as I stepped over the threshold, I heard a loud smack and turned to see him rubbing his bearded face. “Ouch. Dick.”
I laughed and kept moving toward my locker. “Well, you and Charlie will work well together tonight then. You can tell him the time and he can hold the doors for you.”
“Funny,” he replied with a grimace. “C’mon, no-life having son of a bitch, you never pass on overtime. What gives?”
I smiled into my locker and dropped the tool belt inside with a clank. “None of your damn business.”
“Oh shit. You’re hooking it up. Who is she? A new renter? Is she here with friends? Or a sister maybe?”
I shook my head, shut the locker, and moved around him.
“A mother?”
“Dude, no. On all counts,” I added before he could ask then walked to the door and pushed through.
“Psssh,” he called from behind me.
I waved a hand over my head, not bothering to look back. “Have a good night!”
To his disappointment, we’d never hung out to “chase tail” despite working together off and on at East Bay for about four years. He knew by now that his bromance wasn’t the only one I’d rejected. The only time the guys from work saw me off duty was if they happened to show up at The District while I was there. I’d always been more of a loner, never really latching onto the idea of having anyone around all the time. A couple girlfriends out of high school I’d been serious enough with, sure. But there still was nothing that pushed me for something else, made me consider that person on a deeper level, want a more intuitive connection. To not only know them, but to understand them. Their habits. Their choices. Their desires.
Over the last few days, though, I’d found myself wondering those things about Gia.
Our texts and calls continued to be short despite seeing her on Wednesday night, which had me a bit concerned. I didn’t want to bother her, and certainly not come off as needy, so I had to hope her excuse about being busy with work was true and it had nothing to do with my invite to Pacey’s wedding. Wednesday had been such a rush that I decided it was the best time to pull that plus-one trigger. Maybe I’d just shot myself. I hadn’t even expected to see her that night anyway, but she was there. And the next thing I knew, her almost completely bare body was lying in my passenger seat and I was making her forget all about her beignet high.
