Suffixes beginning with ti, ci, and siThe letter combinations ti, ci, and si begin a group of final syllables in English that connect suffixes ion, ian, ent, ous, al, and ence/ance to base words. Those letters (ti, ci, si) spell the sounds [tʃ] or [dʒ] at the beginning of the syllables. The letters ti, ci, and si complete each syllable and link the suffixes to the base word or root. In these and many other Latin-based derivational suffixes, the vowel sound is reduced to schwa. Table 5.6 gives examples of these final syllable constructions.
