I paced back and forth in front of the clock tower, unhinged. I didn’t care that I was under the scrutiny of dozens of human gazes. I might have looked like a madwoman to them, but that was irrelevant to me. The Coven Seekers had been at the Brew Market this whole time, which explained how they were able to infiltrate Sanctum. Who knew, I might have even paved the way for them. All my trips to Magdalena’s bakery…They were probably watching me, studying me, for years.

New Orleans was no secret. Josephine had made it clear that the Coven Seekers were close to taking over the city. That they could only hold up a magical barrier for so long. But Moonwater was another issue. If there were Coven Seekers there, then Ash either lied or his instincts weren’t as sharp as I thought they were. And Chaos…Chaos was going to flip.

The Ember warrior with the silver hair paraded me back down the main street of the Vines. The same street I came in on. This time, however, I was flanked by Lexi. She decided to personally walk me back to the threshold to ensure I fully understood what was expected of me. But my thoughts drifted away, her voice barely audible as I drowned it out. She rattled on about the oath and sealing the Shadowlines, and I merely nodded every few minutes to placate her. But inside, my blood was swirling, boiling with fury, coursing with guilt and shame for being so oblivious to the fact that my enemies had been at my door this entire time. I was just too blind and naïve to see them.

As we neared the edge of the forest, I could already see Chaos, wings out, towering over an Ember warrior, both engaged in heated debate. His gaze broke from the argument and landed on me, a sense of relief flooding his face.

Chaos rushed over, taking my hands in his. “Remove the device from her neck right now.”

The silver-haired warrior glanced at Lexi, who gave her a definitive nod, before she reached out with a key and unlocked the chain from my neck.

I sucked in a deep breath as my magic came flooding back in all at once. Doubling over, I coughed—choked rather—as I tried to regain my bearings.

Chaos gripped my waist to keep me from falling over. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, swallowing hard, my throat raw. “I will be,” I managed to squeak out.

Chaos’s nostrils flared toward Lexi. “Satisfied?”

Her lips curled into a smirk. “Very. I’ll let Arya fill you in on the deal we made.”

My head was pounding. My skin burned as the elements coursed through my veins with a vengeance, wrapping and twisting around every bone and cell in my body like it was starving, desperate to reattach itself to me. “Let’s go,” I whispered.

Lexi called out as Chaos half carried me away from them, “Remember, Arya, blood is binding. It will know if you break the oath, and it will find you all.
