CHAPTER 50

Jaron waited anxiously for news of Valara’s condition from the couch, in complete silence. The caravan was stopped; no vibrations or engines of any kind. Between the new water and salvage from Mr. Wager’s Rumblers, the Rolling Rumblers weren’t going anywhere for a while. Sephaeus stepped out of Princess Valara’s bedroom after putting her to bed.

Jaron stood up. “How is she?”

“Tired, but unharmed,” said Sephaeus. “She will need to recover from the effort.”

Jaron exhaled and sat back down. Sephaeus withdrew Quartz’s glasses from his pocket. The Scripted frames were twisted and bent.

“Can you save them?” asked Jaron.

“I will remake it into something better suited for Casting,” Sephaeus replied, moving to a lounge chair across from the sofa.

“What she did,” Jaron began. “It was—”

“Only a taste of what is possible if you can control the Slicer,” Sephaeus interrupted.

“That gold light…I’ve seen you use it,” Jaron observed.

Sephaeus nodded. “Gold is one of the highest forms of aether. It is pure power used in furious defense of a loved one, and is not as easily vanquished as some others.”

“So Zen Daaz can’t use it?” asked Jaron.

Sephaeus shook his head. “No Unscrupulous can. They lack the heart for it, which puts it beyond their reach.”

“How do you channel anger and love at the same time? What do Sentinels think of when they’re defending?” asked Jaron.

Sephaeus leaned back in his chair and said nothing. Jaron shook his head and apologized.

“Never mind. That’s none of my business,” said Jaron.

The Sentinel Commander slipped the busted glasses into his pocket and intertwined his fingers on his lap.

“We think of who we had to let go of in order to gain the gold. I will leave it at that,” he answered.

Knock knock knock. Someone was at the door. Jaron and Sephaeus both jumped to their feet and came to the door, waiting on opposite sides of it. Jaron held the Slicer in one hand and put the other on the door clasp. Sephaeus nodded to him, and then Jaron opened it. The Brood Triplets stood at the door, with Ava in front.

“Darlings!” Ava held her hands out and walked into the condo, completely ignoring the weapon Jaron was holding.

She squeezed his cheeks between her palms and gave him a long kiss. Jaron stood there in complete discombobulation. Ana Lee and Abigail stood on their tip-toes and peppered Sephaeus with kisses on his face before he had a chance to react. After they finished inundating the pair with affection, the sisters went over to the couch and made themselves comfortable with Ava sitting in the middle. All three had big smiles.

“What—” Jaron found his words again. “What are you all doing here?”

Ava popped a hand fan out and began cooling herself with it.

“Firstly, to congratulate you on exceeding all expectations,” Ava leaned forward. “Warren Wager is completely off balance trying to salvage the situation. He’s withdrawn all his men into the Leviathan and hasn’t been seen since.”

“How convenient for you,” Sephaeus said curtly.

Abigail giggled while Ana Lee blew a kiss at him.
