Chapter 15

By the middle of the week, the high spirits from their weekend caper have started to wear off of Sophie’s co-workers. She has heard the retelling of their shared adventure enough times to last the rest of her days, not that she would ruin their fun by saying so. Ace, in particular, seems to enjoy talking about the close brush he had with a security guard while standing watch. He was in his raccoon form at the time, so Sophie doesn’t think he was in danger of getting caught so much as getting chased off with a broom.

During their shared meal break on Thursday night, Amira dramatically announces that she is ready to give up the glitz and glamor of crime and return to the sedate life of a law-abiding citizen.

“It’s weird. I don’t remember any glitz and glamor when I was kneeling on an open coffin covered in graveyard dirt,” Sophie teases.

“Well, maybe not. But I did look fabulous in my black catsuit. Maybe I should start a life of crime just so I can enjoy the fashion,” Amira says with a thoughtful expression.

“We should have a gang name. You know, if we’re going to become a crime-solving unit. Something befitting our awesomeness. Like, The Awesome Ones or The Amazing Ones,” Ace suggests.

“If we’re going to pick a name which truly represents us, we should be called The Odd Ones,” Fitz counters with a smirk, making everyone except Ace crack up.

“You guys aren’t taking this seriously!” Ace complains.

After that, the crew turns their attention to the next new thing, which currently happens to be Fitz’s accusation that someone on the day shift drank one of his precious sparkling waters. His vow to find the culprit has Sophie and Reggie exchanging amused looks. He even insists that Sophie touch his cans of water to see if she can get a reading on the thief. Sophie has to give him the bad news that she only gets readings off dead bodies.

Picking at her turkey sandwich, Sophie is thinking about the autopsy they finished before their lunch break. It was another shifter-on-shifter attack. According to her vision, it was a dominance fight for ranking within a pack. One of the shifters lost control over his animal half and ended up killing the victim. Reggie explained that in many packs, especially with the more predatory nature of apex shifters, there is a strict hierarchy based on proven strength and displays of fighting prowess. Shifters will often fight to try and improve their place within that hierarchy.

“Do shifters often lose control over their animal halves and kill people? I’ve already seen several since starting work here,” Sophie asks into the sudden quiet of the break room.

“It’s something that happens more often with the apex shifters. They’re more violent than non-apex shifters. It is especially more prevalent in this realm,” Fitz responds.

“Why?” Sophie asks.

“Because the Fae treat this realm like a dumping ground,” Ace says, his annoyance wrapped around him like a cloak. Crankiness
