Chapter 11

Connor

Stress radiates through me as the images of Thomas on the ground haunt my brain. I’m fortunate to have found him when I did. I don't know if I'll ever be able to forgive myself for not acting sooner.

I slip long-sleeved shirts off the hangers one by one and fold them neatly, stashing them into a large duffle bag. I rummage through his drawers and find his other essential needs—underwear, socks, and pants—and pack them in the bag. I also throw in a pair of his favorite shoes, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and his favorite toiletries. Finally, I zip up the bag and place it by the front door.

I lock up his house and throw his bag into the back of his truck bed. I take one last look around to make sure I haven't forgotten anything. My mind racing as thoughts of Iris arise.

I open up the truck door, climb in, and start the engine. As I am about to reverse the truck down the driveway, a mysterious black car slowly enters. I freeze in place, my heart pounding as the car stops in front of his house. I take a deep breath and try to calm myself down, but I can feel my anxiety rising. I clear my throat and jump out of his truck.

"Can I help you?" I nearly yell. I wince at the bright sun hanging above. My hand shoots to my forehead as I attempt to shield the rays from my eyes.

The door swings open, and a heel steps out onto the gravel. Her brunette hair is curled, and her blue eyes are wide with surprise. She stands there, staring at me, her mouth slightly open. "Connor," she says breathlessly. "How are you?"

Surprised, I choked on my spit. My fist hits my chest multiple times. "Millie, what the hell are you doing here?" I choke out.

She looks away, her cheeks flushed. "I wanted to see you," she says softly. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable."

Millie steps out of her vehicle and shuts the door. She walks toward me, her heels scraping across the ground. Her eyes meet mine, and my heart races. I can feel my cheeks burning, and I'm unable to speak. She takes a step closer to me, inches away. "I missed you," she continued.

I laugh. "Oh yeah? Or do you mean you just ran out of men to play with? How did you even find me?"

She doesn't take her eyes off me. "Stole a letter you had written to your mother from her mailbox," she whispers, embarrassed. I take a step back, my heart pounding. She steps forward and cups my face in her hands. I freeze, not knowing what to do. "I came here to apologize. I've changed. These last two years, I spent focusing on myself and figuring out what I want."

"Oh God."

"It made me realize that I want you. I want to be with you. I want to be part of your life and make you happy."

I grab her cold hands.
