Laura stared out the front window of the taxi, where brakes flashed bright red like emergency lights. She curled her fingers into fists and listened as her mom spoke to Mrs. Vanderwaal.

“Oh my goodness. Okay … Oh, Wentworth, too? I’m so … Oh, please, Blair, don’t apologize. I know you would never … What’s that? Yes, yes of course. I’ll give you a call once we’re at the hotel.”

Exhaling slowly, Mom hung up and set her phone in her lap.

“What’s going on?” Dad asked, but Laura already knew. She’d known even before she’d heard Mrs. Vanderwaal’s tinny, strained voice on the other end of the phone.

Mom kept her voice calm. “Evie got out of the apartment. Blair’s sister is visiting with her niece and nephew, and they left the front door open for just a minute. She feels absolutely terrible. But they’re looking for Evie, honey,” she added, turning to Laura. “And she’s calling for volunteers at the shelter to help. They’ll find her!”

Finally, Laura tore her eyes from the traffic scene out the window and turned to face her parents. Their faces were filled with worry, although she knew it was more worry for her than for Evie. Laura said nothing; she just nodded mutely.

“And did I hear her say her cat got out, too?” Dad asked.

“Yes, although apparently Wentworth sneaks out all the time,” Mom said quickly. “But he always comes back. Maybe they’re together!”

“They’re not.” Feeling light-headed, Laura picked up her phone. “I don’t know where Wentworth is, but Evie and a dog caused a giant traffic jam in Columbus Circle.”

“What?” Mom and Dad said at the same time. Laura opened Twitter and found the video of Evie and the dog racing across the street.

“We can’t be sure that’s Evie,” Dad said, his brow furrowing as the video played a second time. “It might not even be a bunny. It could be a cat, or—”

“No, Jorge, look,” Mom interrupted, blinking in disbelief. “That’s Mrs. Vanderwaal’s building.”

“It’s definitely Evie.” Laura’s voice came out flat. She always thought that in a real emergency, she’d be in a complete panic: wobbly voice, uncontrollable sobbing, all of that. But she felt weirdly calm. Worried, yes. Very worried. But she spent so much time feeling anxious that the worst might happen, that once it actually happened, her nerves just vanished. Or maybe this was some next-level anxiety, and her body was going into a numb sort of autopilot.

She scrolled through the gridlock hashtag, stopping when a different video popped up. Holding her breath, Laura skimmed the tweet quickly.
