Chapter Nine

“Camille, wait,” Maggie begged, but Camille pushed past her.

Her stomach twisted in knots as she charged up the stairs. Voices came from Wayne and Samuel’s bedroom and she rushed there, dreading what she was going to see but needing to know. She stopped in the doorway as a faint odor like a barbeque reached her. All the blinds were closed, with extra blankets hung over them to stop all the natural light. Her stomach flopped, and she nearly vomited right there.

Samuel lay in the bed, his pale skin a dark reddish-brown, cracked and oozing. Blisters stood up all over his body, though they were the worst on his face and hands because that’s what had been exposed to direct sunlight.

Maggie put a hand on Camille’s arm, but she shook it off as she inched forward. Wayne was still beside Samuel, holding his bleeding wrist over Samuel’s mouth. He didn’t seem to be actively swallowing, but his chest rose and fell. A hole and a smear of blood was in the center of his chest. Camille pressed a hand to her mouth, holding back a sob.

“What—what do I need to do?” her vision blurred with tears and she felt faint, but she tried desperately to keep herself strong.

“Right now, there is nothing you can do,” Wayne replied.

Another hand touched her shoulder. She turned to see Jonathon. Guilt wracked his expression, but she didn’t care. A well of hatred and anger rose in her and she lunged. A feral scream ripped from her throat as she pounded both her fists into his chest. Utter, raw hatred kept her swinging, even after Maggie yelled at her to stop. Tears streaked her face as she pounded her fists into him, wanting to hurt him, wanting to destroy him.

“You had no right!” she shrieked. “You had no right!”

Jonathon tried to fend her off, grunting with pain as her blows connected. “I was trying—Camille! I was trying to protect you!”

“You had no right!”

He caught her wrists. Camille lunged forward to bite him, but Jonathon turned her and pressed her against the wall. She kicked at him, but he pinned her there firmly so she could no longer attack him. Regret showed all over his face and that was what made Camille stop struggling against him.

“I’m sorry. All I knew was what Maggie said, and from what she said it sounded like you’d been kidnapped. When I smelled you on him… I thought the worst. I was just trying to protect you.”

Wayne’s voice rumbled from behind them. “Let her go.”

Jonathon stepped back, his shoulders slumping. The hatred in Wayne’s expression almost made Camille fear for the dragon shifter. Maggie certainly didn’t like it, because she charged between them and grasped Jonathon’s hand while glowering at both Wayne and Camille.

“You should go,” Wayne rumbled. His arm wrapped around Camille’s waist and tugged her closer as he glared at Jonathon and Maggie. Maggie looked between them nervously and tugged on Jonathon’s arm.

“I was only trying to protect them,” Jonathon repeated.
