Love Match

Fast-paced and fast-growing, Zucchini may just start showing up on your dinner plate less than two months after planting. Despite his minor quirks (vigorous production that’s hard to stay on top of), he’s a great asset to the gardener, not least for all the vitamins and flavor packed into his compact fruit. He’s also super easy to grow, as is his mate, the dainty and delightful Nasturtium.

Although her nickname may be “Nasty,” this cheerful little plant is anything but. Everyone wants to be her friend because of all the hard work she does in the garden. Gardeners love her too for her edibility—both her slightly peppery leaves and her mild-flavored flowers. Laid-back and always ready with a welcoming upturned blossom, Nasturtium doesn’t require much to enjoy herself, even faring well in dry, poor soil. She makes an excellent ground cover, so let her drift and trail anywhere she likes. She’ll happily create a colorful coverlet for your garden bed.

My Place or Yours? Plant Zucchini in full sun when the soil is a warm 75°F. Mix compost or manure into soil and plant seeds 1 inch deep, 2 to 3 feet apart. Plant Nasturtium after your area’s last frost date, ½ inch deep and a foot apart.
