NOTES

1. This refers to the situation up to the time of my release in May 1939. Afterwards, conservatives from conquered countries felt themselves not so much the sold-out part of a political party—as was the case with the Austrian conservatives—but rather the martyred representatives of a subjugated nation that was still fighting on for its liberty. From my experience in the camp it seems that Catholics, if persecuted for their religion, would probably develop the same cooperation in large groups as the Leftists and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. But up to 1939 no large groups of Catholics were brought to camp for their religion or the political attitude of their church.

2. The central party daily of the Nazis, which came out in Austrian, Munich, Berlin, West German, and other editions.

3. Kiesgrube is German for gravel pit. Sturmbann is a battalion of SS.

4. Truppengarage means ‘military garage’ and was used both as the name for the whole working ground where the garages were built, and as the name for several of the working groups stationed there.
