And for the first time since the group started five months previously, Ty let down her defenses and reached out to the group for comfort and support. She let go of her need to preserve a strong and self-protective stance and allowed herself to become vulnerable. She shared her story with the group: After her mother died, when Ty was thirteen years old, she lived with a twenty-eight-year-old man who served as her âboyfriend.â He gave her money and bought her clothes; but the price she had to pay for those things was a violent one. She talked about how she felt trapped, and how hard it was to leave him because she had nowhere else to go (âmy home died with my motherâ). The group also talked about the age difference between Ty and her ex-boyfriend, and how under the law what he did was statutory rape. She shared feelings of wanting to seek revenge on him, as in the song when Eve shot her friend's boyfriend, but reflects how he wasn't worth a life in jail. This leads to a group conversation about the proverb âan eye for an eye,â and how gangs rigidly follow it on the street.
