Creating the Program

T

o review, we have completed a Social Skills Checklist and from this, determined a summary of goals for Timmy. These goals will now become a part of Timmy’s IEP (Individual Education Plan). His entire team should be familiar with these goals.

Since many of the target skills were not demonstrated in a small group, we’ll begin Timmy’s program in a small group, with other students with similar needs. We will focus on Timmy’s goals and as the group begins to make progress, we’ll add peer models, to help generalize skills into a more natural environment.

The following is a program sample for Timmy and the kindergarten social skills group.

Skill work is done during specific activity times, for one hour, two times per week.

*Please see our group format section for teaching social skills later on in chapter 12.
