Definition of Class

The major difference between traditional counseling and multicultural counseling is that a basic principle of multicultural counseling emphasizes understanding clients from their sociocultural contexts (e.g., race, gender, class, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, language, region). Without considering sociocultural contexts, it is difficult to examine the effects of class on the whole person. Class includes economic security or insecurity, means of survival or taste, type of language, type of values and beliefs, dress code, location of residence, and much more. Class contextual factors are complex and complicated due to multiple determinants, unspoken subcategories, having different nuances within a particular class, multiple meanings, and the tendency to deny the class existence in the United States (Diemer, Mistry, Wadsworth, Lopez, & Reimers, 2012; Greenleaf, Ratts, & Song, 2016; Liu, 2013).

The following section discusses the multiple determinants of class, the difference between class and status, and classism to illustrate the complexities involved in shaping a person’s perception, worldview, communication style, and identity.
