FoodCycle’s social franchise model

FoodCycle’s social franchise system was developed to enable the FoodCycle Hub network to expand across the United Kingdom. Its objective is to increase the social impact that we make whilst still delivering the service in a high quality, consistent format. The FoodCycle social franchise system was developed by FoodCycle in conjunction with the International Centre for Social Franchising (the-icsf.org.uk).

Two different social franchise formats were developed – the organizational franchise model and the community franchise model. It is expected that most FoodCycle franchisees will come from existing groups or organizations but it is possible to establish a new community group to operate as a FoodCycle social franchise Hub. As part of the agreement, FoodCycle social franchisees are required to appoint a ‘nominated individual’ who will be the main point of contact between FoodCycle centrally and the local Hub.

Franchising is about the replication of a tried and tested model – business format franchises replicate commercial businesses and social franchising replicates social enterprises and charities.

To ensure quality and consistency is maintained, there must be a franchise agreement and the Hub must deliver social impact and be financially sustainable.
