Women’s tennis, with the popularity and success of Li Na, capitalized on the growing markets in China.

As mentioned previously, the WTA has two major tournaments in China, the premier mandatory tournament in Beijing, and the premier 5 tournament in Li’s hometown of Wuhan. The China Open in Beijing, played at the National Tennis Center which was built for the 2008 Olympics, began as a Tier II tournament in 2004, and was upgraded to a premier tournament in 2009. The Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open was first played in 2014, and, given that it is played in her hometown and that she is a prominent figure at the tournament, it is considered to be Li’s personal tournament.
