You’ve Written Your Masterpiece: Now What? Let Them Read It!

You finally found a way to end your story with something besides “ . . . and they lived happily ever after.” Your setting is full of great descriptions, and you added some new dialogue. You even ran it through spell-check. Nothing left to do now but print it out and . . . oh no! Horror of horrors. You have to let a real human being actually read your writing!

Actually, you don’t have to let anyone read your writing. Sometimes it’s fun to write something just for yourself, something that no one else will see. But there’s a difference between being a writer and being a published writer. You are a writer as soon as you start writing. But to be a published writer, you will have to let someone else read and judge your writing. And it can be pretty scary to show your writing to someone else.

So, now’s the time to make your decision. You’ve spent a lot of time and effort writing something and you feel pretty good about it. Are you ready to show it to someone you trust? Getting a reader’s opinion is incredibly valuable to you as a writer. Once your piece is out there—submitted to a publisher, contest, whatever—it’s done. It’s too late to find out what messages readers will understand from your writing and whether they will discover your true meaning. Asking someone to read and respond to your writing is a great opportunity to receive valuable feedback before you finalize your piece.
